An off-duty police officer was suspended and charged with drunken driving after speeding in the opposite direction on a Long Island freeway for about eight miles before she was stopped by another car.

The officer, three-year NYPD veteran Candice Smith was luckily able to avoid causing any accidents as she headed north in the southbound lane. A graphic designer for News 12 Long Island, Eric Minkoff, was headed northbound in the correct lane when he saw Smith's vehicle in the opposite lane heading his direction, and quickly sped up to follow her as he called the cops.

"We were basically driving side by side with the guardrail between us," Minkoff said to the New York Post. "At an opening in the guardrail, she stopped, and I did too. I started blocking her, going back and forth with my car, while she tried to go around me. Then police showed up."

Smith has been suspended for 30 days without pay.
