Kevin Gates is on a streak. On Monday, he took to Instagram to tease three previously unheard songs, and now he’s back on the site, dropping previews for three more tracks.
While the first cut “On The Regular”—the first and second Instagram video—is a braggadocious tune, the second, “Return of the Mack,” is a song about heartbreak. The third song, which Gates has yet to name, centers on the idea of maintaining his position as a leader who’s ahead of the competition. As evidenced by every single Instagram post from Monday and Tuesday, it also looks like the title of his next project will be I’m Him.
All this music arrives after Gates’ prison stint, which ended in January. Since his release, he’s appeared on a handful of songs, most notably on Mistah F.A.B. and The Jacka’s “Ridah.” But Gates has been a bit quiet in terms of solo material—until now.
Last year, Gates was handed a 30-month sentence in an Illinois prison after pleading guilty to a felony gun possession charge relating to an incident from 2013. While early reports hinted that he wouldn’t be released until June 2018, he was given parole five months early. He's currently under “mandatory supervision” and is forbidden from the possession of firearms.
