Just one week after banning the hashtag #curvy, Instagram has dealt the banhammer on #EDM as well, according to a report from EDMSauce. Even though the timing may be a little ironic, coming right after California's EDM-centric Hard Festival (which had its own controversies this year), Instagram has slowly been banning risqué and filthy hashtags from the app for a few weeks now. The wide release of their advertising API, which means more intrusive ads for everyone (yay!), has been put into wide release, and has cause the company to clean up the app.
Time picked up on this and reached out for a statement, and a rep for Instagram explained that the hashtag “#EDM was being used to share content that violates our guidelines around nudity.” Well, there you have it –– EDM heads likely posting boobs were the culprit. Tags like #edmlife, #edmlifestyle, and #edmgirls are still there however, for anyone wondering.
