He Carried Kool DJ Red Alert's Crates To "Get On"
When: Late '80s
Red Alert is the legendary NYC DJ who helped break artists like A Tribe Called Quest and Queen Latifah. He was also a pioneer in offering hip-hop management services, with a focus on Native Tongues artists.
In the late '80s, Chris Lighty had made a name for himself with his wild Violators crew and leveraged a relationship with Red Alert to break into the music business. Not only did Lighty carry crates containing Kool's massive vinyl collection to gigs, Lighty and his crew also provided protection for Red Alert from disgruntled rappers who were bitter when their record wasn't played.
