Oscar Meyer is bringing the "Glizzy Straw" to life.
This week marked the one year anniversary of a viral video shared by @newyorknico, which captured a baseball fan making a straw out of his hot dog to drink beer at a New York Yankees game.
On Tuesday, Oscar Meyer announced it would celebrate the “key moment in hot dog history” by releasing its own version of the infamous hot dog straw. Described as a "food-safe silicone," the promotional giveaway went live on the company's website earlier this week, with additional giveaways planned for the near future.
The company issued a warning alongside its announcement that says the hot dog straw is not microwave or dishwasher-safe and not intended for hot drinks.
“While the viral ‘Hot Dog Straw’ divided the internet, we salute the brave man who paved the way to enjoy his hot dog as he wishes,” Kelsey Rice, the associate director of Oscar Mayer, shared in a statement. “Taking inspiration from a classic Oscar Mayer dog, the silicone Hot Dog Straw is designed for optimal sipping, and we hope it brings a friendly reminder that we don’t need to take enjoying a delicious hot dog seriously. Some things are just meant to be fun."
A spokesperson for the Chicago-based company told Market Watch that Oscar Meyer's initial allotment of hot dog straws were claimed by customers within nine minutes on Tuesday, before once again selling out on Wednesday.
"We have run out of stock for the day. Please come back and try again
tomorrow.Thank you!" a message currently reads on the company's website.
However, Oscar Meyer plans on doing another giveaway of the Hot Dog Straw, which is available for pre-order nationwide at oscarmayer.com/hotdogstraw.
