This past Tuesday, June 26, hundreds of New York City residents ran to honor and preserve our oceans as part of the adidas x Parley’s Run For The Oceans campaign. Beginning with a campaign kick-off event in Los Angeles on June 8th, adidas has hosted running events in six key cities globally, along with weekly running activities in 50 adidas runner communities around the world. A few more events are left before the campaign ends on July 8th.  Throughout this time, adidas committed to donating $1 to the Parley Ocean Plastic Program for every kilometer ran and logged in the Runtastic app (up to $1 million dollars) to fight against the roughly eight million metric tons of plastic that enter our oceans each year.

At the New York City event, after runners checked in at 6:00pm, the run started at 7:00pm on Hudson River Park’s Pier 26 and took participants on a 5 kilometer route along the river. After working up a sweat, runners were able to enjoy a live performance by Kehlani. Special appearances were made by Parley for the Oceans founder Cyrill Gutsch and model Ashley Graham.

While the Run For The Oceans event is meant to drive awareness for the cause over the course of the summer, over 740,000 runners across the globe logged miles so quickly that adidas contributed their goal of $1 million dollars in just a few short days. If you’re not in one of the cities where the event will be hosted this week, you can still be part of the community of the artists, thinkers, environmentalists, and influencers who are fighting the fast-growing threat of ocean pollution. Just download the Runtastic app to connect with likeminded adidas runners and continue to support the cause.
