You could say that Atlanta-based artist Brian Dettmer has been creating fossils out of fossils in a project he’s been working on since 2005. His relics are welded from cassette tapes, of either the hard rock or heavy metal genre, without the aid of glue or other adhesives. So far, Dettmer’s made several human and animal skulls, and one full human skeleton, which required 180 tapes.
These spookily innovative and humorous pieces were inspired by a dead bird: “Here was this thing that used to live, it used to fly around and play a vital role, and now it is dead and all that remains is the solid material.”
