Designer Monica Franceschi always wanted to cut a record, but apparently, life led her to the path of the visual arts, rather than music. She still found a way to sate her desires, however, by actually cutting records. The series “I Always Wanted to Cut A Record” involves using metal nails to scratch the portraits of musicians influential to her life in the vinyl: Jonsi, Johnny Cash, Louis Armstrong, Thom Yorke, and Billie Holiday all appear.
As the artist describes it:
Black attracts me in all of its forms, music, color, night, our dark side, the darkness revealing the light. It’s in the darkness that we can see the stars. From black vinyl combined with the passion for music, starts the idea of representing the black through light, using the image of musicians as inspiration and vinyl as technical support.
