On his tenth day in New York, Banksy painted the ninth installment of his street art residency in the form of a beaver chewing through a street sign. This piece comes a day after the elusive artist painted a car and part of a wall on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and two days after he painted a door in Greenpoint

Early this morning at 6:44a.m., @banksyny tweeted the following:

The words were thought to be a hint about the next piece. Followers connected the words to lyrics from the hard rock song "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" by the The Smashing Pumpkins. The chorus of the song repeats "Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage," sending fans of Banksy's work on a hunt for one of his iconic rat stencils. Rat...beaver...close enough right?

UPDATE October 10, 2013 1:56 p.m: After someone allegedly tried to chisel the piece out of the wall, locals honored the beaver with a bottle of Brandy and created a makeshift disguise for the piece using garbage bags and cardboard boxes. Looks like Banksy has a street team protecting his work.

UPDATE October 10, 2013 3:20 p.m.: Now a glimpse at Banksy's beaver will cost you. The guys responsible for covering the art are charging visitors to view and take pictures of it. They say Brooklyn is the home of the hustlers but this is ridiculous.

UPDATE October 11, 2013 6:00 p.m.: The beaver-guarders have left the scene and someone took the opportunity to show just how much they hate Banksy (or love attention). The beaver's face has been completely destroyed and a message was left on the wall that reads "WE DONT NEED MORE RATS-MATH."
