Avoid Becoming Shark Bait With These Shark-Deterrent Wetsuits

Don't become shark dinner.

Shark Week is upon us, and judging by reactions on social media everyone loves sharks. If given the chance these amateur marine biologists would probably jump into shark infested waters without a second thought. But chill, there are tons of factoids and tidbits we’re learning about these ocean predators. For one, they don’t really mind turning humans into chum and eating you for dinner. So safety is important when dealing with these trained killers.

If you do decide to swim in shark infested waters check out these shark-deterrent wetsuits from SAMS. Short for Shark Attack Mitigation Systems, it’s like camouflage for the sea. While the shark uses scent as part of its hunting tactic, these suits hide you from shark eyeballs.

There are two wetsuits that work on two separate theories. First is a blue camo suit which takes advantage of the fact that sharks can’t see color. So if it can’t see color, it can’t see you. It really can’t bite what it can’t see, right? The blue design was chosen, as it would be hard to spot during typical ocean conditions.

The second is a striped number. “This design is based on the idea that most sharks don’t like to eat sea snakes,” explains Dr. Hart. So therefore if you’re dressed or look like the striped bands of a snake, you won’t get eaten. Simple.

However, don’t think you could rock these and jump into the water while carrying a bloody piece of meat and think you’re safe.  These suits have not been tested out in the field, so there is no scientific evidence that you are100% guaranteed safe from becoming a shark's happy meal. But, at least they look cool either way. Try these at your own risk.
