In early 2012, President Obama broke ground on the Smithsonian's 19th museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The $500 million dollar museum is set to open in D.C. sometime in 2015 and will now feature a 350-seat theater named in honor of Oprah Winfrey for her generous contributions.
After previously giving $1 million dollars to support the museum, Winfrey dug into her deep, kind pockets once again and donated another $12 million, their largest donation to date. In addition to the Winfrey theater, the building will house many artifacts from African American history, including a trumpet that belonged to Louis Armstrong, the dress that Rosa Parks was sewing when she refused to give up her seat, Emmett Till's casket, a slave cabin and West-African slave shackles.
