"So often, behind the wall you paint, there are some sad histories," writes Escif. The project—Escif is not a single artist or even a group, rather it is described as a situation—has added another mural to the streets of Valencia, Spain. As always, there is a simplicity to the statement, and an underlying intellect that separates the work from other political street art.

Given the common contemporary practice of street art murals as part of larger urban renewal projects, the dark feeling of this piece raises questions beyond the obvious. How does Escif define street arts true role?
