As part of CoSTUME NATIONAL's "NEW NO DARK WAVE" exhibition, James Franco presented a video installation and series of self-portraits modeled after Cindy Sherman's famous film stills from the '80s. Never one to shy away from controversial subjects, Franco's film, James Franco's 40 Minutes, is inspired by the 1980 Al Pacino film, Cruising, which takes place in New York's gay leather-bar scene. For the photo series, Franco wears drag, commenting that "Drag is very liberating...We're all just putting on costumes and playing our parts. It's nice to play other parts than what's expected."

Artists in the exhibition are Tobias Wong, Frédéric Beigbeder, Aaron Young, James Franco, and Daniel Firman. "NEW NO DARK WAVE" is on view at CoSTUME NATIONAL at 150 Greene Street in NYC through October 10 2012.
