WWD Asks: How Much Has the Fashion Industry Donated to the Presidential Race?

Big donations from some of the big names in fashion.

None

Some familiar names in fashion have been pitching in to help President Barack Obama in his bid for re-election. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour raised $500,000 in 2011 for the President and 22 designers are participating in the Runway to Win campaign she's organized this year. The campaign, with the help of designers like Alexander Wang and Marc Jacobs, sells all the Obama merchandise you can handle, with proceeds going to the Obama Victory Fund.

But how much influence does the fashion industry really have on politics? Women's Wear Daily did the math and looked into exactly how much retailers, brand executives, and employees have donated to both the democratic and republican campaigns.

Apparently, in February department store, mass retail and apparel brand executives and employees gave a total of $435,160 to the presidential race, with 53.9 percent to Obama and 45.9 percent to Republicans. Contributions came from companies such as Wal-Mart, Target, Nike, Ralph Lauren, Neiman Marcus, and Urban Outfitters just to name a few. [WWD]
