Former NBA player Darius Miles has filed for bankruptcy, according to the Belleville News-Democrat. Miles is asking the court to sell off his assets in order to pay creditors, listing $460,385 in assets and $1.57 million in liabilities.
After getting selected by the Los Angeles Clippers with the third overall pick in the 2000 NBA Draft, Miles bounced around the NBA, landing with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Portland Trail Blazers, and the Memphis Grizzlies before leaving the league once and for all before the age of 28. In his nine-year career, he reportedly earned nearly $62 million. Outside of the game of basketball, Miles, 34, was once a Jordan Brand athlete, and starred in The Perfect Score, Van Wilder: Party Liaison, and made a cameo appearance as himself in Arli$$.
Back in 2000, Miles was named Mr. Basketball Illinois, and with his stock at an all-time high, he decided to declare for the draft instead of entertaining offers from college programs, such as St. John's. As a member of the Clippers, D-Miles joined forces with Corey Maggette, Lamar Odom, and Quentin Richardson. Even though he came in fourth in Rookie of the Year voting, Miles still landed on the 2001 NBA All-Rookie First-Team, averaging 9.4 points and 5.9 boards per game.
Due to circumstances that didn't have much to do with the game of basketball, Miles was never able to live up to the hype that followed him out of East St. Louis Senior High School. He averaged just 10.1 points and 4.9 boards per game in his NBA career.
