Female Soccer Player Accuses Referee of Asking Her Out in the Middle of a Match in Spain

She says he asked her to go for coffee after the game.

Elena Pavel, a 31-year-old female soccer player from Bulgaria, has accused Spanish referee Santiago Quijada Alcon, of asking her out on a date in the middle of a match during a recent Primera Division game. According to Pavel—who plays for Sporting de Huelva—the referee asked her to get coffee with him after the contest ended.

“I’ve stopped believing in football, in fair play,” Pavel said after the match. “I feel helpless, humiliated. In the many years I’ve been playing football, I’ve never felt so ashamed. Better stick to blowing your whistle.”

Despite what allegedly happened, though, Pavel has already decided not to make a formal complaint against the referee. According to reports, she feels as though it would be her word against his—he has denied asking her out—so she’s not even going to bother filing a complaint against him.

We’ve certainly seen some bad referee fails in recent years, but if this turns out to be true, it’s one of the worst (and most inappropriate) ones we’ve ever heard about.
