If the new car smell can cause car crashes, dealerships and car washes that offer the scent are rolling out death traps. A Tesla driver says the reason he crossed double yellows and hit a cyclist is because of his car's new smell. The 63-year-old man used a baking soda car freshener to cover up the smell, and says that caused him to fall asleep at the wheel. He's being charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.

The victim's family is going as far as suing the old man and Tesla. The lawsuit says the Tesla involved in the crash was "defective and unreasonably dangerous when used in a normal, intended and foreseeable manner."

This has to be the first time new car smell has ever been referred to as "unreasonably dangerous." What other great smells are potentially deadly? The scent after rain? Fresh baked cookies?
