Almost a month after his star tight end Aaron Hernandez was hit with murder charges, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has finally gone on the record and revealed his thoughts on the situation. He didn't get too in-depth with his explanation—you're not really surprised by that, are you?—but he did try his best to put what happened with Hernandez into perspective.
"It's a sad day, really a sad day on so many levels," he said at a press conference a short time ago. "A young man lost his life and his family suffered a tragic loss and there's no way to understate that."
Belichick also revealed that he feels "personally disappointed and hurt" by Hernandez's alleged actions and, while he wouldn't admit that he felt "duped" by Hernandez like others in the Pats organization, he did point out that he has done his best to try and avoid situations like this one.
"We've worked hard over the last 14 years to put together a winning team on the field and in the community," he said.
He then went on to say that he had been told "to address the situation once and move forward," and he attempted to do that by turning down the opportunity to answer other questions about Hernandez.
We have to believe that those questions are going to keep coming, though, both now and as we inch closer to the 2013-14 NFL season. So we hope Belichick hasn't spoken up about Hernandez for the last time. Even though the Pats have cut ties with Hernandez, he's still very much going to be a part of their story for the foreseeable future.
