When Chris Weidman knocked out Anderson Silvawhile he was busy clowning around, he grabbed the championship belt as well as the attention of the public. Fans found out Weidman was no joke with their consciousness intact, unlike Silva. Weidman isn't the only one who won big that night; William Hill sports books also got a 'W.'
Las Vegas Sun reported UFC 162 set a mixed martial arts handle record at the company with wagers totalling more than six figures. William Hill profited between 15 and 18 percent from the card.
William Hill's spokesman Jimmy Vacarro sounded understably hyped about what happened, saying “I can only imagine what the MGM [arena] did. I was astounded by the amount of interest in that fight. Not one [handicapper] came in looking to bet 10, 20 or 30 thousand. It was ticket after ticket. Even in Northern Nevada, the ticket count was good there.” He was once skeptacle about mixed martial arts becoming poopular with gamblers, but of course his opinions have since changed. So if Silva is reaching hard for a silver lining, here's one.
