Prior to last night's Athletics/Royals game in Oakland, a 14-year-old boy named Nick LeGrande threw out the first pitch. No big deal, right? First pitches get thrown every single night in Major League Baseball. This one was different, though, because it was the first robotic pitch in MLB history. You see, LeGrande has a condition called acute aplastic anemia that prevented him from actually attending the game. So he threw the pitch from a studio in his hometown of Kansas City using a robotic pitch machine set up on the mound in Oakland that was provided by Google. They did it to help promote Google Fiber, their gigabit-speed fiber broadway network that is currently being tested in KC.
