Assaulting a police officer is never a good idea. And a former college football star just found that out the hard way.
Back in April 2012, Nebraska cornerback Alfonzo Dennard was involved in an incident just a week before the 2012 NFL Draft that ended with him punching a cop in the face and being charged for assaulting a police officer. It hurt his draft stock and caused him to fall all the way to the seventh round before the New England Patriots finally selected him. And it continues to hurt him now. He was found guilty of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest back in February and, as a result, will now have to serve 30 days in jail and 24 months of probation and perform 100 hours of "law-enforcement related" community service.
There is a silver lining for Dennard, though. His jail stint won't begin until March 1, 2014, meaning he'll get to play out the entire 2013-14 NFL season with the Pats. He also won't miss any time with the team next year, because he'll serve out his sentence during the NFL offseason. But, still, we hope he learned something from this incident. And we hope we don't hear about him making anymore headlines for incidents like this in the future.
