In recent years people have started making surfboards out of bamboo composite. People have also started making just about everything out of bamboo. Your author is even wearing bamboo socks right now.
What's interesting about this bamboo composite that surf boards are being constructed from is that although it isn't quite as strong and it's a little heavier, it is rather similar to carbon fiber in how it can be used in automotive applications. It's also a heck of a lot cheaper due to bamboo's fast growth rate and easy sustainability. The future is like the Spanish Inquisition, nobody expects it.
