The Saucony Kinvara series has had a lasting impact in the running footwear industry despite only being in existence for a handful of years. But while some iterations of the shoe—like the Kinvara 3—have been held in high regard by virtually everyone who’s laced up in a pair, others (like the 4) have seen a mixed bag of reviews despite minimal changes to its core foundation.

As it’s done every year for the past four years, in 2014, Saucony will introduce the next generation of its flagship neutral running shoe. This time, however, the shoe will boast a complete redesign for the first time since its introduction back in 2010.

Among the series of chances in the Kinvara 5 will be a new mesh material that will still be lightweight like the mono-filament mesh version used in previous editions, but will offer more flexibility and durability. Saucony has also added iBR+ rubber on high-wear areas of the outsole for additional durability.

The Kinvara 5 will boast a redesigned midsole/outsole platform, which is made from an enhanced EVA+ material for improved shock absorption and abrasion resistance. In the next-gen Kinvara, Saucony has employed the same PRO-LOCK fit technology seen in the brand’s track spike collection to improve the overall fit of the shoe, particularly in the midfoot region. Also new to the shoe is a new RunDry collar lining that is softer and less abrasive than the HydraMax version seen in previous models.

Despite all the chances, the Kinvara 5 will keep its weight of 7.7 ounces (6.7 for women). The shoe will feature the same 4mm heel-to-toe offset that neutral runners have come to adore. Release date is set for May 1, 2014.
