As election day fast approaches, the cacophony of Americans threatening to high tail it to the Great White North if Donald Trump wins has quieted a little because well, let’s face it: Donald Trump ain’t winning. However, one American not taking any chances is Stephen Colbert. On Thursday’s Late Show, the host met with a Canadian immigration lawyer just in case every single polling metric ever turn out to be way, way, off. As he put it, it’s every American’s "civic duty" to threaten a move to Canada every four years, so we’ll give Colbert a pass.

But after watching the video above, it's clear Colbert didn’t do his homework. When quizzed on how Canada’s government is chosen, he answered with "the Canadian Octagon — two men enter, one man apologizes," which actually isn’t so far from the truth. As for Canada’s three branches of government, Colbert’s response of "the NHL, Tim Horton’s, and Alan Thicke," just has to be right, doesn’t it? Well, it's not.

Despite Colbert flunking his test, that didn’t top lawyer Andrew Cumming from welcoming the late night host with open arms. "Not quite a citizen," he said. "In fact, not even a permanent resident, but we would love to have you."

Maybe it was Colbert’s patriotic rendition of Canadian folk god Gordon Lightfoot’s "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," that did it.  And since Canada has gifted us rad exports like Drake, Ryan Gosling and yes, even Justin Bieber over the last few years, its only fair we return the favor. He’s all yours, Canada.
