The Georgia police officer who accidentally shot his sleeping wife earlier this year has resigned from his position and could face charges, officials say.

On New Year's Day, Peachtree City, Ga. Police Chief William McCollom shot his wife, Margaret, at the couple's home. McCollom then made an early morning 911 call, and his wife was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center. According to the Associated Press, Margaret McCollom was left paralyzed from below the waist as a result of the shooting.

McCollom was initially placed on administrative leave, but the Associated Press reports that he will step down:

I have had had two families in Peachtree City - my police family and my personal family, McCollom said in a statement published on the city's website. In light of the recent tragedy in my personal family, I need to continue to focus my time and efforts there.

What's more, the Associated Press adds that Griffin Judicial Circuit District Attorney Scott Ballard has no plans to charge McCollom with a felony, as an investigation did not indicate that he intended to harm his wife. Instead, Ballard will seek a misdemeanor reckless conduct charge.
