If there's one company that knows a thing or three about the speed of America's broadband services, it's the one that accounts for over 32% of all U.S. Internet traffic. Netflix today decided to share its consumer data with the world and published its ISP rankings (image 2) for the U.S.A. Which provider came out on top? Probably not the one you use.
It was Google Fiber.
Yes, the Google project that's currently only available in Kansas City topped Netflix's list of the fastest ISPs with an average speed of 2.55 Mbps. Verizon FiOS came in second with 2.19 Mbps, and Comcast claimed bronze with 2.17 Mbps.
There's a slim glimmer of hope for those of you wishing you could cancel your service and sign up for Google Fiber. At today's New York Times Dealbook Conference, Google chairman Eric Schmidt took the stage and told the audience that the company's high-speed Internet service is not "just an experiment," but "a real business" that they're "trying to decide where to expand next."
Unfortunately, that's all Schmidt said on the matter. There's no word on when Google will expand the service or where it will set up shop next.
