Anonymous hackers yesterday took down the website for Interpol, the global equivalent of the CIA, after the agency arrested 25 members of the hacking collective, aged 17 to 40, in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Spain.
The arrests were part of Interpol’s Operation Unmask, a response to Anonymous’ attacks against the Colombia defense ministry and Chile’s national library, among other targets.
If there were any doubts to whether Anonymous was taken seriously by international authorities, Operation Unmask eliminated them, as it swept across 40 locations in 15 cities. Interpol executive director Brent Rossbach said, “This operation shows that crime in the virtual world does have real consequences for those [involved.]”
