#15: CYRUS
Director: Jay and Mark Duplass
Stars: John C. Reilly, Jonah Hill, Marisa Tomei
Complex co-sign: With the funny as hell Cyrus, mumblecore filmmakers Jay and Mark Duplass finally made an accessible comedy, one not bogged down by their genre’s typically wanton banter. It didn’t hurt that the brothers hired three of our favorites to star. Reilly plays a schlub who has to win over his new girlfriend’s (Tomei, still not looking a day over smokin’-hot-20) clingy son (Hill). Hill surprises with a performance that’s deeper than his usual comic relief work, and nobody does insecure charm better than Reilly (“What are you doing here at the forest with Shrek?”). This could’ve easily starred Ben Stiller and sucked, but, thankfully, Reilly got his time to shine.
