Meek Mill was recently invited to the White House for a Prison Reform Summit, but ended up calling off the visit. A story then surfaced that Jay Z had called Meek and persuaded him to cancel. The summit was to be hosted by President Trump, and attended by Congress members, activists, leaders, and victims of the prison system.

TMZ reported that Meek was also allegedly called by other high-profile black voices who were worried. “I was originally scheduled to be part of a panel on Prison Reform at the White House to help shed light on the issues within the system,” Meek told TMZ. “Unfortunately, the focus turned to the president and myself which concerned me that it might take away from creating a positive result from today’s discussions.”

Now, however, Meek has cleared a few things up, namely that Hov never called Meek. In a new interview with Power 99 radio station in Philadelphia, the recently released MC says that he decided not to make the trip on his own volition, and that the timing just wasn’t right.

“[Jay Z calling me] is not true at all. I just ain’t feel good about it,” Meek said. “I was kind of excited because the bills they’re trying to pass actually like helping 4,000 people be released, not having women chained to beds when they going through labor.” He continued, “It was like a lot of policies that the congressmen [and] a few other people was presenting and they wanted me to be a part of it. I was actually excited to even be invited to something like that.”

“A day before, I just started thinking about it. It’s too much criticism. Me and the president, we represent two different types of things—like I said, it’s two different Americas, and I’m really representing the other side of America.”

Meek also touched on prison reform, making music again, his experience in jail, being with his family, and more.
