As anyone who spends their New Year's Eve indoors in front of a TV and/or an illegal stream, the 2017 edition of the Ryan Seacrest-hosted broadcast ultimately resulted in a tweeted explanation from Carey stating that "shit happens." Sources told Entertainment Tonight at the time that Carey had trouble with her in-ear monitors, an issue that was allegedly not resolved prior to Carey taking the stage.

This year's New Year's Rockin' Eve festivities also featured performances from Halsey, Portugal. The Man, Camila Cabello, Khalid, and more. As the clock hit twelve, Carey joined fellow performers with Seacrest to ring in a year that will certainly be better than the last. Right?
