The 100 Best Opening Lines in Rap History, Part 2: 50 - 1

16. "I said a hip hop/Hippie to the hippie/The hip, hip a hop, and you don't stop." - Wonder Mike

Song: "Rapper's Delight" (1979)
Album: Rapper's Delight

No wonder Diddy made Da Band learn the lyrics in the second season of MTV's Making the Band. Wonder Mike's lyrics aren't thought provoking, and they really don't make all that much sense, but they pop off the tongue (once you know them). They embody part of the most basic appeal of rap as an art form: They're just fun to say. When so-called "purists" complain about your favorite rapper not spitting thought-provoking lyrics, remind them that the genre they're listening to is named for a nonsense word, and one that started out as a simple, unlikely, and equally nonsensical thing of beauty, too.
