During the 1950s and 60s, Brigitte Bardot was one of the best-known sex symbols across the world. The French model, singer, and actress became the face of Marianne, appeared in a number of films, and was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Actress in 1965. She was once described as a “locomotive of women’s history” and one of the most liberated women of post-war France, in an essay by Simone de Beauvoir in 1959. And while she retired in 1973, she recorded over 50 songs and was awarded, but rejected, the Legion of Honour in 1985.
