B-boying is getting to be like soccer these days—popular around the world but mostly ignored in the U.S. But see, unlike fútbol, we actually created this shit! So maybe it's time we started paying a little more attention to our homegrown head-spinners, pop-lockers, and windmillers. Luckily, the good folks at Red Bull are still keeping breakdancing alive—they recently hosted the Red Bull BC One international b-boy competition in NYC, and enlisted none other than Blastmaster KRS-One to host the event. How fuckin' hip-hop is that???

Fresh off penning a 600-page(!) book titled The Gospel of Hip Hop: First Instrument (buy it now), the Teacha—as always—was in a fine mood to talk. We caught up with him before the Red Bull event to ask him about his breakdancing memories. Read on for KRS-One's favorite b-boys (and girls) of all time....

Interview by Leah Tisdale

Name: Clown
KRS-One says: Let's start with Clown. He used to be with [Bronx crew] B-Boys in Action. And he was one of the first b-boys that I ever saw that I thought had real skill.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Darrin Dewitt Henson
KRS-One says: I don't know his b-boy name but his name was Darrin. He's been in a bunch of movies. Now, he had a breaking/exercise workout video that used to play as an infomercial some years ago. He's a black man, high-top fade hairstyle. Look up "Darrin's Dance Moves" or something, I don't remember the name of the infomercial! [Ed.—It's Darrin's Dance Grooves. Don't front like you don't own it, Kris!]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Richard "Crazy Legs" Colon
KRS-One says: Crazy Legs. Crazy Legs is a favorite for me because I see everybody doing his moves. Simple.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Steffan "Mr. Wiggles" Clemente
KRS-One says: Mr. Wiggles, in particular, because he defends b-boying. Mr. Wiggles was the first person I heard defend b-boying. Yo, like, LITERALLY, speak up on it. Even Crazy Legs, he's done it, but Mr. Wiggles is the spokesperson. He's vocal, and I like that as a b-boy. B-boys are very proud, but not vocal. They speak more through the body language.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Quick Step
KRS-One says: Next is Quick Step. I think he's here tonight actually. One of the best because, it's one thing to break here [at a competition]. And it's another thing to break in a sweaty club, on a dirty floor, that smells like you-know-what. And "Step Into A World" comes on, and you gotta get it in. I travel with breaking crews, I'm one of the only rap crews that do it. But I notice that, in my earlier days, b-boying was stronger. Physically stronger. We took more blows. Today, bones are breaking too quick! [Laughs.] So Quick Step for b-boys under pressure. I've witnessed it and that's why he's one of the best, because I've seen him have to do his thing under horrendous conditions. And he was good.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: B-girls
KRS-One Says: There are some women who are excellent, but I don't know their names. I've seen them on my stage and KILL IT though.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Common & Jermaine Dupri
KRS-One Says: The rapper, Common. As a b-boy, he's dope. Jermaine Dupri is a b-boy and he's dope. They can tie for number seven.
