You might be surprised how many people happen to have the name Isis.

In Greek Mythology, Isis was goddess of the sky, which eventually made the name pretty common. Despite its beautiful origins, the name Isis currently has a bad reputation due to the use of ISIS as shorthand for terrorist organization the Islamic State.

That's why a Redditor asked the question, "People named Isis: How's life going for you these days?" The responses made the front page on Saturday, and they just might make you laugh or cry.

The name Isis won't get you tips

Hippyhumanitarian might not be named Isis, but the Reddit user shared an experience of working with someone who is:

"I work with a girl named Isis at a restaurant. We have our names print out on all our bills but she had to change it to just her initials so people would stop harassing her. There were a few customers had her in tears, telling her she should be ashamed of her name and worse. The sad thing is I remember her telling me about the origin of her name, after an Egyptian God, and thinking it was so beautiful."

Geez. Be sure to tip your servers, and remember that people don't usually pick their names to reflect entire extremist organizations, for crying out loud!

In Denver, Colorado, Redditor hovv said there's a bookstore called Isis and "it's been vandalized. I'm pretty sure the terrorists are about to throw in the towel now that a local book shop was messed with, WAY TO GO DENVER WE WIN!"

Similarly, Angypangy knows of a neighborhood store called Isis Essentials. AerasGale jokingly responded, "I'm imagining an ISIS member entering the shop for war supplies and finding only sex toys."

Typ964 tried to imagine what such an interaction would look like, and LOL:

"I'm here for bombs. Allahu snackbar."

"Dildos are on aisle 4. Go fuck yourself."

Picking baby names can be a difficult decision, especially if both parents have their favorites. Jp_Liddell wrote:

My daughter was born around 2 weeks before ISIS was in the news and widely known about in the US. When the doctors asked my us what our daughter was going to be named I said Jane Iris Doe. My wife said "This whole time I thought you said Isis and I thought it was beautiful, you know the name of cat womens cat." After a short discussion I convinced her that Iris was a nicer name and we stuck with that. Never have I been so glad to win an argument.

That was definitely a close one.

For all of you named Isis out there, remember—you're not alone.

We're sorry you have to deal with cretins who can't tell the difference between an individual human being and an entire extremist organization that just so happens to have the same name.
