Shortly after unveiling their new logo and helmet design, Nike and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released photos of their new "NFL Nike Elite 51 Uniform" for the 2014 season. While the logo and helmets designs took a step up in the aggressiveness department, the uniforms seem to have moved in the opposite direction. The bright red from previous jerseys has been replaced by a deeper red, accented with "Bay Orange" and pewter. The pants for both the home and away jerseys are also pewter with orange and red, a color scheme that is said to honor the franchise's past and present" while confidently positioning the team for the future."
The design element that will undoubtedly receive a lot of criticism is the new name and number font. The reflective chrome-beveled characters resemble those found on a calculator and they too feature the deep red/white scheme with accents of orange. Nike says that Tampa Bay is now the first NFL franchise to have the chrome borders on the front, back, and shoulders of their uniform (also where the redesigned ship and "Bucs" branding is found), though we're not sure if it will become a trend.
Buccaneers co-chairman Edward Glazer and the rest of the organization are excited to show off what two years of research and planning has produced: "We worked closely with our partners at Nike to design a uniform that would set the standard for both design and functionality. The result is a sleek, modern design that honors our championship past while also establishing a new, bolder identity moving forward."
