Environmentally conscious London-based startup Zero Carbon Foodrecently launched an innovative and sustainable project called “Growing Underground.” The project transformed an abandoned World War 2 subterranean air shelter into an agricultural oasis. By employing LED lighting and hydroponic technologies, the company was able to begin growing vegetables and herbs without sunlight, soil, or pesticides. By utilizing such cutting edge technology, Zero Carbon Food was able to dramatically reduce the distance-based carbon footprint of transporting produce, or “food miles.” Cleaner and more eco-friendly food production techniques such as these not only produce healthier foods, but also increase their shelf life.
