Toronto-based design studio Teehan+Lax Labs has created D.I.G.I.T., a digital mirror that transforms hand motions into digital interactions. The mirror is actually a camera feed that compiles its display graphics using input from 48 seven-segment panels. The data is processed using ASCII and typewriter art, with the panels receiving commands from an openFrameworks application that runs on raspberry pi computer. When the system detects motion in the background frame, it flips on the LED sequence. While the design is itself a work of art, its conception is what gives it true artistic value—its ability to transform our movements into illuminating kinetic silhouettes gives this device a techy, new-age, perhaps even utopian aesthetic.
