Oslo-based architectural firm Snøhetta is currently building a 21,000-square-meter extension onto SFMOMA's existing space and have recently unveiled their designs for the staircase that will connect the old space with the addition. The staircase will be built beneath a skylight designed by the building's original architect, Mario Botta. Snøhetta co-founder Craig Dykers told Dezeen that the staircase "bridges the current and future buildings, and extends the existing design vocabulary." The addition and the staircase are scheduled to be completed in 2016.
