Normally, a black woman being fired for having blonde highlights in her hair would be an open-and-shut case of straight-up racism. But when you add in the fact that this occurred at a Hooters, and the woman was let go for the reason that her hair presented an "improper image," this only adds to the absurdity and hypocrisy of the whole situation.
Has Hooters ever been to a Hooters? Since when are they concerned about a proper image? How can Hooters present itself as any type of authority on what is improper? The restaurant uniform uses boobs and underbutts to lure in lonely truck drivers and pimply teenagers. NO ONE IS THERE FOR THE WINGS.
The former employee has filed a racial discrimination complaint with the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights. According to her, the Baltimore restaurant's managers "gave me write-ups and they told me I need to take the color out of my hair. And they said I couldn’t have blonde in my hair because I’m black. They specifically said, ‘Black women don’t have blonde in their hair, so you need to take it out.’”
And yet, she claims that her co-workers also had highlights in their hair. "There were Asian girls with red hair and Caucasian girls with black hair and blond streaks," but they never faced the image-based wrath of their restaurant managers.
