A First Look at the 2013 MTV VMAs Stage at Barclays Center With Two Giant KAWS Sculptures

This year, the VMAs will be like never before. For the first time, the awards show will be hosted in Brooklyn at The Barclays Center. Also for the first time in 30 years of VMA history, the Moonman looks different, thanks to the artist KAWS. Today, we got to take a look at the whole set before the VMAs this weekend, and we learned that KAWS ALSO designed two massive sculptures for the stage.

Instead of the astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, KAWS made his character Companion land on the moon. Companion has become the artist's signature icon, appearing on toys, subway cars, in gallery shows, and as a giant balloon at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Check out the images above to see how KAWS has transformed the VMAs plus a photo of him below posing with the Moonman he designed.
