This year, the Brooklyn art fair (organized by Bushwick artist Jules de Balincourt) will in fact be taking place in an outer borough—in Queens. Bushwick Basel, happening from June 1-2, is happening at the Knockdown Center in Maspeth, Queens, just outside Brooklyn, with arranged booths and catering by Roberta's Pizza.

The event, now in its second year, is experiencing notable growth in scale with 40 galleries participating in the event, including Storefront BushwickNURTUREartRobert Henry ContemporaryOUTLET Fine Art, and ArtHelix. While some gallery directors have expressed their excitement over the new venue, others question the implications of the move. Airplane Gallery’s Lars Kremer said, “Last year it was cool and small and really alternative. Now it’s getting too big and commercialized…It’s getting a little Disney World….It’s getting gentrified and blown out of proportion.”

We guess it remains to be seen.
