Patrick Dougherty's latest sculpture, "Ballroom" uses over 10 tons of willow tree saplings, taking over Melbourne's Federation Square. The sculpture is part of a larger "Stickwork" series, which comments on the money Australia spends managing the wild growth of this plant (nearly 2 million AUD). In re-appropriating this material, Dougherty's artwork reminds us of the ways art can change the meaning of undervalued objects. It will be open to the public in early 2013.
