Trendsetter: Pablo Picasso
Breton stripes have a pretty interesting story; Navy seamen in the French province of Brittany wore knitted shirts in 1858 with 21 stripes to honor each of Napoleon's victories. Fast-forward to 1917 when Coco Chanel decided she wanted people to swag out in Breton stripes, where she started incorporating it into her collections. Then, one of the most famous painters to grace the earth, Pablo Picasso, took keen to the Breton stripe look and voila! A year-round style trend is born.
