Carlos Mare, better known as Mare139, appeared in the classic documentary Style Wars in 1982. His career took shape through subway writing, getting up with regularity from 1975 to 1985. As he matured, so too did his approach and eventually Mare139 developed a more modernist approach to graffiti.

Since 2005, Mare has married abstract explorations of the line with an exploration of Bboy movement. The resulting works connect physical graffiti, his term for Bboy dance, and the spatial formations of paint.

Physical Graffiti: Art of the Bboy Dance is an exhibition of Mare's recent paintings and collaborations with local artists at Berlin's Skalitzers Contemporary Art. On view through June 30, 2012.
