2012 is without a doubt the year of Cindy Sherman, whose highly anticipated 35 year retrospective at MoMA opened in February to unanimously positive reviews from the press and public alike. Auction results have told a similar story; to note but one example, I attended the March 8 Phillips de Pury Contemporary Evening Sale at which Untitled 426 (a monumental clown portrait) sold for close to half a million dollars. In addition to her MoMA show, which will travel to San Francisco, Minneapolis and Dallas, Sherman has an exhibition opening April 28 at her New York gallery, Metro Pictures, whose showcase of the photographer's early Murder Mystery collages at the recent ADAA Art Show was one of the highlights of The Park Ave Armory-hosted fair.
