To date, Rinko Kawauchi has published a number of books featuring her signature square-shaped photography. The most recent, Illuminance, which spans 15 years of dreamy contemplation and comprises a series of images that were exhibited less than a year ago at Hermès on Madison Ave, earned her a nomination for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. Organized by The Photogaphers' Gallery in London, the winner will receive a £30,000 cash prize for having “significantly contributed to photography in Europe between 01 October 2010 and 30 September 2011.” Regardless of the outcome, Kawauchi will exhibit her work alongside fellow nominees John Stezaker, Pieter Hugo and Christopher Williams at The Photographer's Gallery this summer.
