Artist Paints Portraits From Skype Calls

Sandro Kopp's latest works build from technology.

In an increasingly global world, Skype has helped minimize the gap between friends living in far flung places. That little box we're all so familiar with, giving just enough of our loved ones, is the inspiration for artist Sandro Kopp's latest portrait series. There You Are braws from Skype-sittings, from which Kopp paints what he says is a hybrid of "painting done from life and painting done from a photograph."

You may recognize some of the faces, Ryan McGinley, Michael Stripe, and Frances McDormand are just some subjects of the subjects.

The exhibition is part of a partnership between Istanbul '74 and Lehmann Maupin Gallery launched last September aiming to foster cultural exchange between New York and Istandbul. There You Are opens this evening and runs through February 4, 2012.

Lehmann Maupin, 201 Chrystie Street, NY, NY.
