Pedro Martinez Celebrates Columbus Day by Saying Awful Native American Stereotypes

Pedro Martinez made some rather, um, interesting remarks when discussing the Indians during a TBS postgame show.

Pedro Martinez took his Columbus Day celebration more than a little bit too far on the TBS baseball postgame show Monday. While discussing the Cleveland Indians' sweep of the Boston Red Sox, Martinez started riffing on the fact that it was Columbus Day and he found himself talking about Indians. But the bit, which you can see the key parts of above and see in its entirety over at Deadspin, very quickly went someplace very uncomfortable.

"Once in a lifetime, when I played baseball," Martinez began, "I used to hunt Indians. But now, I'm going to pay tribute to the Indians. And I'm going to go..."

And then Martinez engaged in a stereotypical (and racist) "war whoop," to the inexplicable laughter of his co-hosts.

"And guess what?" he continued. "I may have kinky hair, but I'm going to pick an Indian."

Reaction to Martinez' monologue was instantaneous on social media:

I send my apologies if I was misunderstood when I was trying to pay tribute to the Cleveland Indians on the TBS post season show.

I was referring to my pitching years facing Cleveland. Nothing else. Again, my apologies.

It did not take long for Martinez to issue the inevitable apology tweets:
