Following his team's season opener, Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall explained his decision to take a knee during the national anthem, telling reporters, “I support Colin. I support ‘Kaep.’ I understand where he’s coming from." The immediate takeaway from his actions were the fact that Marshall was supporting Colin Kaepernick, his college teammate and fraternity brother, according to Shaun King. What we never took into account was the part where he said that he understood where Kaep was coming from.
The Denver Post is reporting that the Miami police are investigating an incident from two months ago where Marshall claims authorities handcuffed, and threatened him with a Taser. On the night of July 4, the Broncos linebacker was at a restaurant with acquaintances in downtown Miami when reports of a shooting surfaced. In the midst of all disarray that ensued, a woman who was directing traffic, flagged down police, and directed them to Marshall.
Marshall was handcuffed, and threatened by authorities with a Taser for resisting. As he waited in the back of a cop car, one of the officers received a call, notifying them to let him go. “They told me, ‘Look, we’re not going to take you in as long as you keep this between us,'” Marshall said. The investigation by the Miami police is still ongoing.
Since protesting the national anthem, Marshall has not only met with Denver Police Chief Robert White to discuss a number of issues affecting the country today, but he's promised to donate $300 for every tackle made this season to community organizations.
