Did we miss the year that Dwight Howard won an NBA championship? Was he on the Spurs last season? Or the Heat the season before that? Was he running with the Lakers back in 2009 and 2010? Ummm…no. He wasn't. So he's never actually won a title.
But that didn't stop him from calling himself a "champion" during his post-game press conference following the Rockets' loss to the Warriors last night. While Steph Curry's post-game press conference featured a lot of laughter, his daughter Riley, and even some singing, Howard's was ridiculously depressing. But it did feature him saying that he still feels like a champion, even though he's obviously not.
"It's tough, but I won't stop fighting," he said when he was asked about all of the injuries he had to overcome this season just to stay on the court. "I'm going to continue to push myself to the limit and remember that, no matter how the season ends, I'm still a champion. And I won't let anyone tell me anything different."
"Still a champion"? We sort of appreciate Howard trying to turn the low point in his season into a positive. He was likely physically, mentally, and emotionally drained when he sat down at the podium for his post-game press conference. But come on. He had to know people were going to destroy him for making a comment like that, right? And they did.
